Quick Navigation:
The fitness culture in Nairobi has grown significantly in recent years. Almost every estate now has some form of gym or training facility, meaning that if you're looking to keep fit while in Nairobi, you're likely to find a gym near you. However, many of these gyms are severely under-equipped. While this may not matter during off-peak hours, it becomes a real challenge in the evenings, especially after 5 p.m., when they tend to get overcrowded. The lack of equipment at peak hours can be discouraging and, in some cases, it even causes people to abandon their fitness journey altogether. For this reason, having access to a well-equipped gym with adequate space is critical. Below is a list of gyms I consider the best in Nairobi when it comes to equipment and space.
Located on the third floor of the prestigious Village Market, VMX is arguably one of the biggest and most well-equipped gyms in Nairobi. It boasts state-of-the-art equipment and spacious training areas; you are unlikely to miss equipment for whatever you want to train here. But it also comes with one of the highest price tags.
For those willing to pay, it delivers a premium experience. Also, considering its location at the Village Market, parking is in plenty. Richard Gitau, one of Kenya's most respected bodybuilders and personal trainers, is a regular at VMX.
AfroFit has established itself as a growing fitness chain in the country, with operations in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Malindi. However, unlike Smart Gyms, AfroFit subscriptions are not transferable across gyms. In Nairobi, it has two branches: Thika Road Mall (TRM) and Delta Chambers in Westlands along Waiyaki Way.
Not that it matters, but you can see that AfroFit Delta Chambers has fancier colour-coded plates and metalic dumbbells, unlike the TRM branch, which has generic-looking black rubber plates.
One of the newer entrants into Nairobi's fitness scene, The Burn Club is located at Azalea Square, General Mathenge Road. It has quickly gained attention for its modern setup and flexible access.
It is not as extensive as AfroFit or Village Market, but it is very well equipped. If you prefer attending classes, they are priced at KSh 1,500 each. One of the well-known bodybuilders in Kenya, Hanif Physique, the winner of 2021 Mr 001, is a regular here.
With multiple locations—including Junction Mall (Ngong Road), Diamond Plaza II (Parklands), Southfield Mall (Mombasa Road), and The Hub (Karen)—Smart Gyms is the most widespread chain in Nairobi. It is also among the most affordable options.
One of the biggest perks is that with a six-month subscription, your membership is transferable across branches—making it ideal for people who move around the city. One thing to note about Smart Gyms is that equipment repair sometimes might not be as fast. Antony Gachau, a very popular bodybuilder in Kenya, is a regular at Smart Gyms Karen.
Located at Holden Towers, Shimo la Tewa Road, off Dunga Road, Advanced Fitness Gym is a budget-friendly option that still delivers solid value.
Nairobi's fitness scene is diverse, with options ranging from high-end luxury gyms to budget-friendly community spots. The choice ultimately comes down to your priorities; whether it's affordability, premium equipment, flexible access, or proximity to where you live or work. As the city continues to embrace healthier lifestyles, access to quality gyms will remain a key part of this movement. What matters most is finding a space that motivates you, fits your schedule, and supports your long-term fitness journey.
This list is by no means conclusive; it's simply based on my experience. Prices are accurate as of 6th September 2025. Feel free to comment below and share your thoughts: do you agree with this list? Would you recommend other gyms, and why?
