Popular events like the Ndeiya Classic and RVO Salama Hills sell out quickly, so register as soon as registration opens. Major events use platforms like njuko.com, safariraceseries.com, or riftvalleyodyssey.com. Local club races often use Google Forms or direct M-Pesa payment via WhatsApp.

Question 6

How do I submit a cycling event to the Fit Savanna calendar?

Accepted Answer

You can submit cycling events by emailing cycling@fitsavanna.co.ke or sending a message via WhatsApp. Include the event name, date, location, distances, cost, and registration link or contact details.

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The cycling scene extends well beyond Nairobi. Kitale Critical Mass is a free monthly community ride in Trans Nzoia County starting from Kitale Showgrounds. Tour de Kajiado covers the open Maasai plains south of Nairobi. The Safari Race Series visits Naivasha. Multi-day expeditions like the RVO Maasai Mara and Kilimanjaro to Sea cover vast distances across Kenya and Tanzania. Malindi also has its own road race scene.

RVO events feature professional timing, SAG support, camping, and cater to both recreational and competitive cyclists.

Question 11

What gravel cycling events take place in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Kenya has a growing gravel scene. Key events include the Loop Safari Gravel Race series in Limuru (March) and Naivasha (June) with 20km, 50km, and 100km options; the Migration Gravel Race through the Maasai Mara (650km over 4 days); and Kiambu Gravel (November) organised by Rift Valley Odyssey with 40-70km routes.

Question 12

Are there cycling events for women in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Kenya hosts the Pedalmania Ladies ITT (Individual Time Trial) in March - a 30km race in Ngong organised by Rona Riders with a 10km family fun ride option. Most major events including Tour de Kajiado, Migration Gravel Race, and Safari Race Series also have dedicated women's categories with equal podium recognition. Pedal Power Kenya is a women-focused cycling group that organises regular rides.

Question 13

Accepted Answer

Critical Mass Nairobi is the city's biggest monthly community cycling ride, held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts and finishes at Jeevanjee Gardens in the CBD at 9:00 AM, covering approximately 30km through Nairobi's streets. It's free to join, open to all bike types and fitness levels, and advocates for safer streets under the #CyclistsLivesMatter banner. No registration needed - just show up with a roadworthy bike. Family-friendly venues include Karura Forest, Oloolua Nature Trail, and Twin Rivers Resort Tigoni.

Question 15

What is the difference between XCO, XCM, and XCC mountain bike races?

Accepted Answer

XCC (Cross-Country Short Circuit) races are short, intense 4.5-9km races lasting 20-30 minutes. XCO (Cross-Country Olympic) races are technical lap-based races of around 18km lasting 1.5-2 hours. XCM (Cross-Country Marathon) races are long-distance endurance events of 33-75km+ taking 2-5+ hours. Events like Kibiku XC focus on XCO-style racing, while the Kili Trails festival features all three formats.

Question 16

What are community group rides and how do I join one?

Accepted Answer

Community rides are informal, non-competitive group rides open to all levels - no entry fee, no timing. Popular ones include Thika Road MTBers (every Sunday from Ruiru Bypass, free, MTB-focused, ~50-100km), Critical Mass Nairobi (monthly, last Saturday, Jeevanjee Gardens, ~30km, all bike types), and occasional long-distance road rides like TRM to Ekalakala (127km to Masinga Dam). Routes and details are shared via Facebook and WhatsApp groups closer to the ride date. A helmet is typically required.

Question 17

What are the best cycling routes in Nairobi?

Accepted Answer

Top options include Karura Forest (15km+ of shaded single-track, beginner-friendly), Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary (18km, intermediate), Ngong Hills Cross-Country (18km+, advanced with panoramic views), and Oloolua Nature Trail in Karen (12km, beginner). For road cycling, early morning rides on the Southern Bypass or through Runda are popular before traffic builds.

Question 18

What are the best mountain biking trails in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Kenya's best MTB trails include Karura Forest (beginner to intermediate single-tracks), Ngong Hills (advanced technical trails with altitude), Kerio Valley (extreme descents), Loita Hills (remote wilderness riding), Chyulu Hills (volcanic landscape), and Mount Kenya forest trails (high altitude, technical). Many organised MTB events like the Kenya Bike Odyssey showcase these trails.

Question 19

What are the best cycling destinations outside Nairobi?

Accepted Answer

Popular destinations include Tigoni and Limuru (rolling hills, tea plantations, 60km+ routes), Lake Naivasha (scenic lakeside cycling and wildlife), Kiambu (varied terrain for gravel rides), and Machakos (technical trails). The coast is also worth the trip - Watamu hosts the annual Sokoke Forest MTB Challenge through the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, and Malindi has its own road race scene. For multi-day adventures, consider Mount Kenya trails, Great Rift Valley routes, or the Kilimanjaro to Sea expedition running from the Kilimanjaro slopes in Tanzania down to the Kenyan coast.

Question 20

How much is cycling in Karura Forest?

Accepted Answer

Karura Forest entry fees are KES 100 for Kenyan citizens and KES 200 for non-citizens (as of 2025). You can bring your own bike for free, or rent one at the gate for approximately KES 300-500 per hour. The forest offers over 50km of cycling trails with varying difficulty levels.

Question 21

What is the best cycling route for beginners in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Beginners often start at Karura Forest or Oloolua Nature Trail in Karen, which offer relatively flat, traffic-free terrain. Hell's Gate National Park (25km, bike rentals available at the gate) is another excellent option. The Safari Race Series and RVO events also offer Lite categories with shorter, more accessible distances for newer riders.

Question 22

What type of bike do I need for cycling in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

For forest trails (Karura, Ngong Road Forest), a hardtail MTB with 35-45mm tyres works well. For gravel races and mixed terrain (Safari Race Series, Kiambu Gravel), a gravel bike or hardtail MTB is ideal. For technical trails (Ngong Hills, Chyulu Hills), a full-suspension MTB is recommended. Road bikes suit smooth tarmac routes. Gravel bikes are an increasingly popular all-rounder for Kenya's varied conditions.

Question 23

How much does it cost to start cycling in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

A reasonable starter setup: entry-level mountain bike (KES 30,000-50,000), helmet (KES 2,000-5,000), padded shorts (KES 1,500-3,000), jersey (KES 1,500-3,000), water bottles and repair kit (KES 2,000), and a bike lock (KES 1,500). Total: roughly KES 40,000-65,000. Budget option: rent at Karura Forest (KES 300-500/hour) to try before buying.

Question 24

Where can I buy cycling gear and get my bike serviced in Nairobi?

Accepted Answer

Major shops include Bike Hub Westlands, Thorn Tree Safaris, The Bicycle Garage, and Cycleworld Kenya (Mombasa Road). These stock bikes, helmets, clothing, shoes, and nutrition products, and offer maintenance services. Basic service costs KES 1,000-2,000; a full service runs KES 2,500-5,000. Mobile mechanics also operate at Karura Forest on weekends.

Question 25

Is it safe to cycle in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Cycling in Kenya is generally safe with proper precautions. Stick to organised group rides, designated forest trails, or low-traffic roads (Tigoni, Limuru, Runda). On roads, ride during daylight hours, wear bright colours and lights, stay alert for matatus and potholes, and use available bike lanes. For wildlife areas like Hell's Gate, maintain distance from animals. Always carry your phone and ID, and inform someone of your route.

Question 26

Do I need permits or a licence to cycle in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

No licence is needed for recreational cycling. For KCF-sanctioned races, a racing licence is required. Popular venues charge entrance fees: Karura Forest (KES 100 citizens), Hell's Gate National Park (KES 515 citizens with own bike), Ngong Hills (KES 232), and Oloolua Nature Trail (KES 100). Cycling on public roads requires no permit.

Question 27

When is the best time to cycle in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

The dry seasons (January-March and July-October) offer the best trail conditions for gravel and mountain biking. Cool months (June-August) are ideal for long endurance road rides and high-altitude training. Early morning rides (6-9am) are recommended to avoid heat and, in Nairobi, peak traffic. Avoid the heavy rainy seasons (April-May, November) when trails become muddy.

Question 28

How does Nairobi's altitude affect cycling?

Accepted Answer

Nairobi sits at 1,795m (5,889ft), meaning less oxygen and harder breathing - especially for those arriving from sea level. Allow 1-2 weeks to acclimatise and expect to ride slower initially. The upside: training at altitude improves aerobic capacity, making you noticeably stronger when riding at lower elevations.

Question 29

What should I eat and drink for long cycling rides in Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Eat a carbohydrate-rich meal 2-3 hours before: ugali with vegetables, rice and beans, chapati with eggs, or oatmeal with banana. During rides over 90 minutes, consume 30-60g of carbs per hour via energy gels, bananas, dates, or sandwiches. Hydrate with 500-750ml of water per hour - more in hot conditions. Post-ride, eat protein and carbs within 30 minutes (chocolate milk, githeri, or a protein shake).
