Who is behind the Kitui Green Run?

The event is organised by Green Africa Group in partnership with the Kitui County Government and Athletics Kenya. The Run Chair is Julia Kalkwe. Kenyan marathoner Mutiso serves as the brand ambassador.

Why is the run held in Kitui specifically?

Kitui is one of Kenya's most water-stressed counties, where communities compete with wildlife for scarce water resources and students lose school time searching for water. The Kitui Green Run is the first run of its kind held in a dry region, using sport to drive tangible water harvesting outcomes and position Kitui as a destination for sports tourism.

Course Details

A certified 21km mostly-tarmac loop starting and finishing at Kitui Stadium. The outward leg runs on tarmac through Kitui Town (~5km), Syongila Junction (~9km), Unyaa/Kwa Maingi Primary School and Dam (~13km), and Ithookwe Airstrip (~17km), before the return leg (partly off-road) back to the stadium. The 10km corporate challenge starts at 7:00 AM; the 5km and 2km youth categories start at 7:30 AM.

Getting There

Ithokwe Stadium is in Kitui town, approximately 170km southeast of Nairobi via the A109 Mombasa Road through Machakos. The drive from Nairobi takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. Kitui town has accommodation and services for those travelling the day before.
