Did You Know?

🌍Henry Wanyoike lost 95% of his vision overnight on 1 May 1995 after a stroke at age 20 - and went on to become one of the greatest blind runners in history.
🌍Wanyoike won Paralympic gold in Sydney 2000 in the 5,000m, pulling his exhausted guide across the finish line in a moment that was broadcast around the world.
🌍At the 2004 Athens Paralympics he set world records in both the 5,000m (15:11.07) and 10,000m (31:37.25), and also held the world record in the half marathon (1:10:26).
🌍His marathon world record of 2:31:31, set in Hamburg in April 2005, still stands as the world record for blind runners.
🌍Wanyoike founded the Henry Wanyoike Foundation in 2007 to give back to the community that supported him - running his own kindergarten, awarding school scholarships, and employing blind Kenyans to operate knitting machines.
🌍The Hope Run has been held annually for over 18 years and has grown into one of the largest sporting events in Kikuyu, drawing thousands of children, families, and runners each year.
🌍Wanyoike runs with a guide connected by a tether on the wrist - a system that lets the guide signal turns, obstacles, and pace changes without breaking stride.
