Like almost everything in Kenya today, gym prices have been slowly creeping northwards, especially within Nairobi. What has not kept pace though is quality. We are now paying more, but, in most cases, getting roughly the same facilities we would have a few years ago.
Currently, the price of good gyms usually starts at around KES 3,500 outside Nairobi, and about KES 5,000 within the city for most established facilities. That is roughly around KES 2,000 more than it used to be around the COVID and pre-COVID era.
Translated to USD as of March 2026 (1 USD to KES 129), that is about $39 in Nairobi at the very least, and about $27 elsewhere.
The reason for the high prices is usually attributed to the gyms' locations; many are situated inside major malls or estates considered upmarket, where rent has also been increasing steadily. With rents in those areas showing no signs of easing, do not expect gym prices to come down any time soon.
For example, Shiloh Gym, located around the Garden Estate - Thome area, costs KES 5,500 per month (KES 300 daily), despite being significantly smaller and less equipped than the nearby AfroFit TRM branch, which charges KES 6,000 per month (KES 2,000 daily), or Natty Gym in either Kahawa or Membley, which costs KES 4,500 per month (KES 450 daily).
Similarly, Zeal Health in Thome costs KES 8,000 per month, but its equipment does not compare to Advanced Fitness Gym in South B at KES 5,000 per month (KES 1,000 daily).
In many of these cases, you will find that gym pricing in Nairobi feels random at best, because even location alone cannot fully explain why some cost more than others.
Within the price ranges of KES 4,500 to KES 10,000, you cannot walk into a gym and assume it is premium based on its subscription price. If proximity to your residence is not a top priority, visit a few before committing. Assess the equipment, the space, and whether it feels right.
You can find gyms near you via Google Maps, or use our dedicated gym locator, which is free and ad-free.
One more thing worth noting is that most gyms in Nairobi tend to get overcrowded during peak hours, regardless of price. This is not necessarily because a gym is affordable or popular but due to the supply of decent fitness facilities in the city being considerably less than the demand.
Switching to a higher priced gym will not guarantee you avoid the crowds. Your best option would be to adjust your schedule and attend during early morning or late morning hours when it tends to be quieter.
If you are looking for affordable but well-equipped gyms, Eastleigh is an area worth considering.
You will find some of the best value gyms in Nairobi there. Bodyfuel Fitness Center is one of the most well-equipped gyms in the city at KES 5,000 per month (KES 1,000 daily), and Fitness Empire Gym matches that price at KES 5,000 per month (KES 500 daily).
Several gyms in the area also follow a model where men and women train in separate sections, which many members prefer for both comfort and focus. It is worth calling ahead to confirm how a specific gym operates and whether that setup works for you.
