How hilly is this route?

Expect over 900m of elevation gain across the 50km, climbing from Nairobi's roughly 1,795m up into the Limuru highlands above 2,100m. This is one of the more challenging climbs in the InterTown series.

How do I get back to Nairobi after the race?

The race finishes in Limuru at New Kiboko Hotel. Most participants arrange their own return transport; matatus run regularly between Limuru and Nairobi's CBD, or coordinate with fellow runners for a shared ride.

Is this suitable for first-time ultra runners?

50km with 900m+ of climbing is a serious undertaking. Strong half marathon and marathon runners who train well on hills and road can attempt this distance, but if you're new to ultras, consider building up through shorter InterTown events first.

Course Details

The route runs point-to-point from the GPO in central Nairobi to New Kiboko Hotel in Limuru, via Kiambu, covering 50km on road with over 900m of elevation gain. Nairobi sits at around 1,795m while Limuru climbs higher still into the cool tea-growing highlands, so expect a sustained, demanding climb for much of the route. The early 4:00 AM start helps runners cover ground before the sun is up and traffic builds.

Getting There

The race starts at the GPO on Kenyatta Avenue in central Nairobi, easily reachable from any part of the city. The finish is at New Kiboko Hotel in Limuru, approximately 50km northwest of Nairobi via Kiambu. Arrange return transport from Limuru in advance; most participants sort a lift or use matatus back to Nairobi after the race.
